Across the state of Arkansas, we have quite a history with tornadoes over the past 100 years. They have ranged in devastation, but they’ve all been equally unnerving. On Jan. 21, 1999, the state experienced 56 tornadoes in one day, which only emphasizes the fact that even though we are not considered part of “tornado alley,” tornadoes are something we need to worry about. Read on to learn more about tornadoes affecting Arkansas and how you can be prepared if one strikes near your home.
As reported by the Associated Press, in April 2018, Mountainburg, Arkansas, experienced a major tornado event that tore through the town and caused immense damage. The event injured at least four residents, brought down trees, power lines, and other installations, and left many damaged buildings and homes in its wake. This was a scary, painful event for the residents of this community, and served as a reminder that the Northwest Arkansas region is certainly not immune to these kinds of weather events. The tornado was part of an intense storm system that affected multiple states across the country.
In the event of a tornado, you need to have some sense of preparedness. Remember to continually monitor your local weather channel or listen to your radio. If you receive word of a tornado warning, this means an active tornado has been sighted. You need to take cover and go to a designated spot away from windows. Keep in mind that hail often accompanies tornadoes, especially in our region, which is another reason to get inside immediately. From there, you need to wait until the tornado has passed and it is deemed safe. There is no telling how long the event will last; tornadoes vary in size and duration.
