How Safe Is It to Flush Flushable Wipes?

-Bentonville, NA

When did you first learn about the benefits of using wet wipes instead of toilet paper? You weren't sure how you felt about it at first, but after a few trips to the restroom, you were hooked! Although they are capable of cleaning, they are not the heroes we had hoped for when we initially purchased them. These wipes are "flushable," according to the package, but are they actually safe to flush?

THE BREAKDOWN

Wet wipes are labeled as "flushable" and "septic-safe," so flushing them shouldn't be an issue, right? False! Even when these wipes do break down, it takes longer than toilet paper to do so. Because wet wipes do not break down as rapidly as dry wipes, they are more likely to clog pipes and cause clogs. If you put your home's plumbing at risk of major blockages, you'll end up paying a lot of money in plumbing expenditures.

WHICH “FLUSHABLE” PRODUCTS CAUSE BLOCKAGES?

When flushed, these so-called "flushable" wipes may become entangled with other items in your sewage line. Thick toilet paper, paper towels, cotton swabs, dental floss, sanitary pads, and toilet cleaning pads are all often flushed objects that cause jams and backups.

When these compounds are mixed with wet wipes, they form a clog known as "ragging." If this happens to you, pick up the phone and call a plumber right away.

WHAT CAN I SAFELY FLUSH?

Despite the fact that manufacturers claim that flushable wipes are safe to flush, there is evidence that flushing them can increase the risk of clogged sewage lines and demand more frequent septic tank pumping. You should avoid using wipes, despite the fact that they look to be the greatest innovation since sliced bread. Toilet paper is meant to be the only item flushed, aside from "the obvious."

GOT A CLOG?

Just because someone says something doesn't mean it's true. The same may be said about your favorite "flushable" toilet paper and its deceptive packaging. If you have frequent blockages in your home (whether or not you use wet wipes), you have an underlying problem that must be addressed. Contact a professional plumber to unclog your pipes.
